Would you like to involve more of your neighbors in lake protection?
Celebrate the beauty and benefits of your favorite lake with a party,
publicity, or poster contest this summer!
Here are a few ideas:
- Hold a Boat Parade around
the lake on July 4. The more patriotic, the better!
- Plan a picnic,
barbecue, water festival or other event and invite other lakeshore property
owners to have fun on the lake with you
- Hold a Regatta! It could
be a Sailboat Race, a canoe event, or even a Treasure Hunt with
clues hidden in places along the shore, on buoys or islands.
- Lead several
canoe and kayak trips during July for anyone who wants to paddle
along.
- Organize a lakeshore
clean-up day to collect trash and wastes that have washed ashore. Follow
the clean-up with food!
- Sponsor
a Fun Run to help the lakes; entrants can get pledges to raise
money for Boat Inspections, next year’s Water Festival,
etc.
- Photograph people
having fun on the lake or volunteers working to protect it and send the
photo(s) with caption(s) to the newspaper.
- Write an article
about how valuable your lake is and send it to your local weekly paper. Send
photos along with this.
- Hold a Lake Days
Celebration at your community’s
day camp. Check with Maine Department of Environmental Protection
for ideas.
