YES! I want to support Maine Lakes Society and the Protection of our Cherished Places!

If you haven’t heard, we changed our name to Maine Lakes Society and have expanded our efforts to protect Maine's Lakes.  And as you may know we are forging ahead at a critical time in the history of Maine's lakes. The lakes protection unit of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection(MaineDEP) has been gutted and the ability of its staff to educate the public has been severely restricted.  Efforts to roll back important lake protection regulations remain an live in Augusta.  And according to a recent scientific journal, the quality of water in many of Maine's lakes has declined by as much as 20% since 1995.

In response to the threats above, we are excited to offer LakeSmart, our scientifically proven and cost-effective strategy to protect our lakes from the pollutants that are carried in stormwater and eroding soil.   As a reward-based program that creates an incentive for folks to care for their lakes from their own front yards, it has grown over 300% since we assumed its administration less than one year ago. We are also revitalizing Lakes Alive! our floating classroom that enables kids of ALL ages (adults too!!) to explore lakes in innovative and experiential ways. Recognized by the EPA and the George Lucas Foundation as a cutting-edge educational program, Lakes Alive! captivates its participants and cultivates a whole new generation of lake stewards.  We continue to advocate for the protection of our lakes in Augusta and partner with a host of organizations, legislators, and experts in the field of lake science to increase the power of our efforts.

We are excited to rise mightily and effectively to meet the challenges that lie ahead.  But we need your help - our goal is to raise $25,000 by the end of 2013, and with your help we can do it!!   If you made an Annual Appeal gift in 2012, please consider increasing it by 100%.  Or consider making a restricted gift to your favorite Maine Lakes Society Program.  If you have never been a member of our team, please consider becoming a CHARTER member of at our discounted rates. Your gift will have an enduring  impact on the health of Maine's treasured lakes and help preserve them for future generations
